The Shabnam Mousavi Scholarship (hereinafter Scholarship), is named after Dr. Shabnam Modarres Mousavi, SABE President (2018-2020), prolific international scholar and committed supporter of multidisciplinarity and new research ideas in the studies of human behavior.

The Scholarship is awarded by the Society for the Advancement of Behavioral Economics (SABE) on an annual basis to a scholar or scholars for research completed and submitted before Ph.D. graduation. Eligible are scholarly articles in any discipline pertinent to human decision making, including but not limited to theoretical, experimental, empirical, methodological, and heterogeneous.

  1. The recipient of the Shabnam Mousavi Scholarship is selected on competitive grounds from among researchers of all nationalities, genders, ages, races, and ethnicities, unhampered by artificial barriers, prejudices, or preferences. An open call for submission of applications for the prize is circulated via the SABE website, mailing lists, social media, and other public sources.
  2. Eligible to apply are PhD students affiliated with any university/research center who at the closing date of application shall not have completed their PhD degrees. To apply, the candidates should
    • Have an accepted paper for the upcoming SABE conference where the award will be given, attend the conference and present their paper.
    • Submit this paper for Scholarship competition in journal format (no longer than 10,000 words, excluding appendices).
    • Submit a nomination letter from the academic supervisor/department/division head, certifying that the applicant does not have a PhD degree at the moment of submission. If the submitted paper is co-authored, the applicant’s contribution must be at least 50% and the percentage of contribution should be explicitly characterized in the nomination letter. After selection the co-author(s) will be contacted to verify applicant’s contribution to the paper.
  3. The submission shall be made online in electronic format. Selection of the winner takes place by an independent steering committee appointed by SABE Executive Committee and approved by the SABE Board.
  4. The winner of the competition shall be named the Shabnam Mousavi Scholar and announced at the Annual Meeting of SABE, shall be present to receive the award. A winning scholar is eligible for
    • A monetary prize of up to $1,000 (before income taxes and applicable fees).
    • Fast track review of the paper for publication in the Journal of Behavioral Economics for Policy (JBEP) with a publication fee waiver (provided that the paper meets the current journal requirements, including the length).

The scholarship is funded by the revenues from the Shabnam Mousavi Endowment Fund raised via donations from private and institutional sources. The Endowment Fund is managed by SABE, but it is not part of the SABE’s budget. SABE Treasurer and the Executive Committee shall be responsible for the maintenance and bookkeeping of the Endowment Fund and shall report to the SABE board periodically about the status of the fund.

Individuals or institutions can donate to the Shabnam Mousavi Endoment Fund. Your contribution and generous support will help SABE to continue the tradition of awarding scholars who are at early stages of their career for their exceptional academic research in Behavioural Economics and/or related fields.
