The John Tomer Memorial Prize is named after one of the Society for the Advancement of Behavioural Economics (SABE) co-founder, the late John Tomer. Professor John Tomer was a prolific scholar and enthusiastic teacher as well as an energetic advocate for pluralism and open-mindedness in research. He is well remembered for his support for early career researchers throughout his career and mentored both SABE and IAREP colleagues.

The John Tomer Memorial Prize is awarded by the Society for the Advancement of Behavioral Economics (SABE) to a scholar for research submitted and presented at the Early Career Researcher (ECR) workshop during the annual SABE or joint SABE-IAREP conference. Eligible are scholarly articles submitted before PhD graduation in any discipline pertinent to human decision making, including but not limited to theoretical, experimental, empirical, methodological, and heterogeneous.

  1. The recipient of the John Tomer Memorial Prize is selected on competitive grounds from among researchers of all nationalities, genders, ages, races, and ethnicities, unhampered by artificial barriers, prejudices, or preferences. An open call for submission of applications for the prize is circulated in collaboration with the local conference organizing team via the official conference website, the SABE website, mailing lists, social media, and other public sources.
  2. Eligible to apply are PhD students affiliated with any university/research center who at the closing date of application shall not have completed their PhD degrees. To apply, the candidates should
    • Have an accepted paper for the ECR workshop of the upcoming SABE or joint SABE-IAREP conference.
    • Submit this paper in accordance with the ECR workshop’s requirements (i.e. length of the paper) which shall be communicated in the call for applications.
    • Have registered for the ECR workshop.
    • Present their paper at the ECR workshop.
  3. The submission shall be made online in electronic format. SABE and the local conference organizers shall communicate about the concrete submission procedure.
  4. Selection of the winner takes place by a panel of experts which is appointed by SABE in consultation with the local conference organizing committee.
  5. The local conference organizers, in consultation with SABE’s Executive Committee, will schedule the award ceremony during the conference. All ECR workshop participants who applied for the John Tomer Memorial Prize shall be present at the ceremony.
  6. The winning scholar is eligible for a monetary prize up to $200 (before income taxes and applicable fees)

The John Tomer Memorial Prize is funded by the initial endowment of Doris Tomer and donations from private and institutional sources. The John Tomer Memorial Prize fund is managed by SABE. SABE’s Executive Committee in consultation with the SABE Board will determine the amount of the John Tomer Memorial Prize for a year depending on the money available in the Prize fund.
